11th Annual Woman of Distinction Award Luncheon
Wednesday April 15, 2009
Glendale Community College Student Union Building

The 10th Annual Women of Distinction Luncheon was held on April 16, 2008. The catered luncheon was at the Phoenix Zoo in the Stone House Pavilion. There were over 200 members in attendance including presidents from all but one college. Our own Dr. Anna Solley was there, and is a past recipient of the distinguished award herself.

At the event, there was a silent auction to raise funds for the Dr. Gina Kranitz Scholarship. PC’s Aida Music secured a donation, through her contact Dijana Music, from the company Philosophy that included:
1 item - Amazing Grace Shower Gel 16oz
1 item - Amazing Grace Body Emulsion 16oz
1 item - Purity Made Simple Face Wash 16oz
1 item - Raspberry Sorbet Lip Shine .5oz
the above listed items were included in a rattan gift basket for the silent auction
Philosophy also donated: Cinnamon Buns Shower Gel 16oz and 250 samples of Amazing Grace Shower Gel Foils 15ml Which were included in the table setting.
Your PC Representatives arrived in time to volunteer for the event, and they were asked to stand on the pathway to the event. Elena Hernandez and Cheryl Axtell along with three other representatives from other colleges ventured out into the sun in order to direct attendees to the pavillion. I joined them later.
The opening remarks and welcome were given by RSC President, Dr. Linda Thor. Dr. Solley hosted a table at the event, and presented our Woman of Distinction, Dr. Camilla Westenberg with a medallion, flowers, and a certificate.
Five Gina Kranitz scholarships were awarded—announced by Linnea Sarkis. Veronica Herrera, mathematics faculty, Phoenix College, was a scholarship recipient. Please take the time to congratulate her.
The luncheon continued with a unique honor bestowed upon Linda B. Rosenthal, Governing Board Member and founder of the Women’s Leadership Group. Mrs. Rosenthal is retiring at the end of this calendar year, and WLG Co-Chairs Maribeth All and Melanie Abts honored her with a lifetime achievement Woman of Distinction award. Linda received a standing ovation, twice. In addition, Maribeth commissioned an original song from singer/songwriter Jodi Light. The song was performed by the artist at the event. If you were not there, it was uplifting and perfectly suited for Linda, WLG, and the occasion. Jodi has not recorded the song; however, she does have plans to do so in the future.
The Chancellor, Dr. Rufus Glasper, in his congratulatory remarks reminded and charged us all with the responsibility of keeping this dream alive. He spoke of participation, innovation, and true leadership.
The luncheon concluded with a recognition of past recipients, and photo opportunity for all recipients.
